- This 5-day western Mongolia wildlife tour takes travelers into the remote Altai landscapes of Bayan-Ölgii, from the blue waters of Tolbo Lake to the remote valleys and ridges of the Ulaagchin Wildlife Area. The route is designed for travelers who want to search for some of Mongolia’s most impressive mountain species, including Altai Argali, Altai Ibex, and Central Asian Wapiti, while staying in remote ger camps far from the country’s standard tourist circuit.

Itineraries
01
Day 1: Fly to Ölgii – Scenic Stay at Tolbo Lake
- Fly from Ulaanbaatar to Ölgii, the cultural and administrative center of Bayan-Ölgii Province. After lunch in town, continue 40 km south to Tolbo Lake, a high-altitude lake surrounded by open steppe, rocky hills, and the distant ridges of the Altai Mountains.
- Spend the afternoon walking along the lakeshore, taking in the quiet alpine landscape and wide views across the water. In the evening, settle into a ger camp on the shores of Tolbo Lake.
- Overnight: Ger camp at Tolbo Lake

Day 2: Journey to Ulaagchin Wildlife Area – Bulgan County
- Depart from Tolbo Lake and drive toward Bulgan County, passing through remote valleys, rugged Altai peaks, and open western Mongolian landscapes. Arrive at the Bulgan Wildlife Research Center, located on the banks of the Bulgan River.
- After settling into Bulgan Wildlife Camp and enjoying lunch, visit the research center to meet local conservationists. The center introduces travelers to the region’s key wildlife species, including Altai Argali, Altai Ibex, and Central Asian Wapiti, as well as the conservation programs working to protect them.
- Rest early in preparation for the next morning’s wildlife safari.

Day 3: Full-Day Wildlife Safari & Photo Expedition
- Depart at 5 a.m. for Khavarzan and Ulaagchin Mountains, among the best areas for wildlife observation in the region. Trek or ride horseback to remote viewpoints where guides scan the ridges, slopes, and valleys for movement.
- Look for Altai Argali, known for their massive curled horns, as well as Altai Ibex and Central Asian Wapiti moving through the mountain terrain. With luck, travelers may also spot wolves, foxes, and snow cocks, a rare high-altitude bird species.
- Enjoy a packed lunch in the wilderness before continuing the afternoon wildlife search. Return to Bulgan Wildlife Camp for dinner and rest.

Day 4: Second Day of Wildlife Viewing & Exploration
- Continue the wildlife safari, exploring new valleys and ridgelines in search of more Altai wildlife. Trek deeper into the mountains to increase the chances of seeing predators, mountain ungulates, and rare birds in their natural habitat.
- Enjoy a picnic lunch in a scenic mountain setting before visiting ancient petroglyph sites, where early nomadic people carved images of wild animals into the rock. These carvings add a cultural layer to the journey, showing how long people have lived alongside the wildlife of the Altai.
- In the evening, return to camp for a farewell dinner with local wildlife guides and horsemen.

Day 5: Return to Ölgii – Flight Back to Ulaanbaatar
- Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at camp before driving back to Ölgii town. Depending on flight schedules, either fly back to Ulaanbaatar the same day or spend an additional night in Ölgii.
- If time allows, explore the local market and browse Kazakh handicrafts, including embroidered textiles, felt goods, and traditional items from western Mongolia.
